Unlike some bloggers I've encountered I appreciate being corrected. One of the main reasons I started this blog was to LEARN from my readers!

I have edited the blog to reflect the correction, so it now reads "half-sister" for the benefit of future visitors who may wonder what we're talking about.

NOTICE TO OTHER READERS: If you see any mistakes, PLEASE point them out. It will not hurt my feelings.Lenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07032828338163601344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4947585282417094438.post-82061064990890566242009-08-20T12:35:59.125-04:002009-08-20T12:35:59.125-04:00I've been thoroughly enjoying your blog! Your ...I've been thoroughly enjoying your blog! Your writing style is captivating and you have a real knack for helping your people jump off the page and be "real." Keep on keeping on and I'll keep reading!

That said, I thought I'd point out a small discrepancy in what you've related here. You say, "This Samuel would have known the Hinman family, since his step-sister married his brother-in-law."

If I'm understanding you correctly, Hannah Coe (who married Titus Hinman, Samuel's brother in law) would have been Samuel's HALF-sister and not his step-sister. The difference, while small and most likely simply an unintentional slip, is important.

Again, LOVE your blog!!!!Patti Browninghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16071347657188818481noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4947585282417094438.post-33846076274147787532009-07-19T21:20:00.195-04:002009-07-19T21:20:00.195-04:00You are spot-on, Ken! Thomass Jenner III, then one must wonder what kind of upbringing it was that led him to venture out on his own at the age of 13!

My great-grandfather, Almond Lewis Jenner, was definitely raised by his step-mother, since his birth mother died the year after he was born. That's why I have put as much effort into tracking her down as I have his birth mother. She was more of an influence on him -- and on my great-great-grandfather -- than his birth mother. Neither he nor my grandmother actually KNEW his birth mother. And it is most likely that it was the step-mother who made most of the entries in the Jenner family Bible that I have written about so often in this blog!Lenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07032828338163601344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4947585282417094438.post-3530412157164567782009-07-18T02:08:39.040-04:002009-07-18T02:08:39.040-04:00Hey Len! Long time no talk.
Legal/social lineage...Hey Len! Long time no talk.

Legal/social lineage (and thus name history) is one thing. Biological is another. Studies show that these days, anywhere from 5-20% of presumed biological fathers (guys who think they are the biodad) aren't Sometimes this is deliberate paternity fraud, sometimes it is something else.

Did this go on as much in the past? Hard to say. People were generally around fewer people in the past - not packed into densely populated areas. On the other hand, there were no DNA tests in the past, either, and if a woman was not bearing children it was hard on the famil business (like farming) because children were put to work helping out as soon as they could. That is a strong motivator to see if it is the husband's issue and not the wife's.

Of course, heritage is not so much about biology. Our culture is passed down to us by are parents, who are the ones who raise us - wether the biological connection is there or not.Kori and Ken Pellmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16321735402629817917noreply@blogger.com
